Properties and Applications
- Standard wire-rope isolators are made of stranded stainless-steel cable that threads through aluminum-alloy retaining bars. Corrosion-resistant metal construction gives the isolators a design unaffected by temperature extremes, ozone, chemicals, oils, and abrasives.
- WRI is the most efficient and most reliable equipment for protection of mechanical and electrical systems from vibration and shocks impact.
- Friction between intertwined cables in WRI absorb mechanical energy and converts it into the heat. High inner friction between stainless steel wires provide absorption and dissipate large amounts of low and high frequency vibrations and great deflection isolates also the shock impact.
- There are three loading modes in which WRI can be used: P compression load, K45° combined load, and S shear and roll load.
- Wire Rope Isolators Applications: Air Conditioning Systems, Power Generators, Industrial Machinery and Equipment, Transport, Electrical Switchboards, Petrochemical Industry and Aerospace Engineering.
Throughout their working lives, electronic parts used in airplanes, rockets and satellites are subject to the vibrations present in the structure of the vehicle in which they are installed. The main sources of vibration include the engines, propellers and rotors of airplanes and helicopters, and rocket launch activities.
Anti-vibrational mounts are often fitted to enable electronic components to pass compliance tests and then continue functioning properly during their working lives. These supports must not only isolate the equipment, but should do so with extreme reliability over time and be of minimal weight. Sensitive aircraft and satellite parts also often need protection from the vibrations and accidental impacts that can occur during transport from the production plant to the final assembly site. For this purpose, transport pallets and containers are made using wire rope isolation technology to absorb and dissipate unwanted vibration and shocks impact.
Example of Applications in Aerospace Engineering
Wire rope isolators are an essential part during the transport of sensitive equipment. In this image we can see the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument mounted on a transport plate with wire rope isolators for vibration and shock impact protection.
